Barium Carbonate (BaCO3) is the main source of barium oxide in glazes, where it functions as both a flux and assists in producing matte finishes. Because barium carbonate is both a flux and a matting agent, it can produce results that are difficult to achieve with other materials -- for example, there are many glazes that take advantage of barium carbonate's tendency to produce uniform micro crystals within a glaze matrix for a matte finish. Barium carbonate is also used to neutralize sulfates and cut down on surface scumming in claybodies.
