Texture mats are a favorite here at The Ceramic Shop when it comes to tools used in surface decoration. You may have heard clay texture mats referred to as texture sheets, impression mats, stamps, and molds, but the idea behind all of these different names is the same: these flexible mats are used to create beautiful impressions on pottery and other ceramic pieces. They are recommended for both advanced potters and beginning clay artists and loved by children and adults alike.

Clay texture mats come in a variety of materials, though the most common include silicone/rubber and plastic. In most cases, clay texture mats can be used directly on the surfaces of wet or leather-hard clay, without the use of a releasing agent. The simplest application is on a flat, wet slab of clay, but because many texture mats are flexible, they can also be used on curved surfaces as well. Depending on the pattern of the texture sheet, impressions left in clay can appear either embossed or stamped, allowing for endless possibilities in surface decorations. They are great for classrooms and studios as they are inexpensive, durable, and easy to clean and store.
