Inclusion Stains
Also known as ecapsulated stains, these pigments can be used to add bright reliable glaze colors all the way up to cone 10! This is made possible by using inorganic compounds of cadmium and other exotic or potentially dangerous colorants, but encasing them in a zirconium silicate crystal structure. This process takes advantage of the stability and durability of the zirconium silicate crystal structure while maintaining the bright color provided by the base oxides.
We recommend testing these stains in your own base glaze to check compatibility, but we have found in our own tests that they work equally well in zinc and non-zinc bearing glazes as well as at midrange (cone 5-7) as well as high fire (cone 9-10). We have tested them at 5% concentration, though some bases may need more or less to suit the saturation level you are looking to acheive. Because of the process used to manufacture these stains, it is recommended NOT to ball mill them, as it could break down the structure and render the material unsafe.
