Colorobbia's Mother of Pearl Luster - 25g

Mother of Pearl Luster is an overglaze that produces beautiful opalescent colors. It is typically applied to accent or highlight ceramic wares or jewelry. Lusters are consideed overglazes because they are typically applied to glaze-fired pottery, on top of the glaze. The piece is then fired again at a low temperature (see details below).

Mother of Pearl luster appears iridescent when applied on top of a white glaze. Luster colors will vary depending on the glaze underneath them. As always, we recommend conducting tests prior to use on your work.

How to use:
When using luster overglazes, it is important to work in a well-ventilated area. It is also highly recommended that you wear a vapor respirator to prevent the inhalation of unpleasant fumes.

1. Be sure that the surface of your piece is free of dust, skin oils and lotions to ensure proper adhesion. Wipe surfaces with rubbing alcohol prior to applying the overglaze (except when used over crackle glazes).

2. Always apply with a brush that is designated solely for use with the luster to prevent contamination.

3. Do not stir or shake the luster overglaze.

4. Place a small amount of luster on a glazed palette. Apply one smooth coat. Do not let the luster pool in an area; brush it out smoothly and evenly.

5. Overglazed ware can be fired while it is still wet. The kiln must be clean, well-ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal firing schedule. Do not touch wet decoration and handle as little as possible until ware is fired to avoid smudging.

6. Fire the luster to cone 018.

Note: This product is for use by artists ages 12 and up. Read instructions prior to use.

Overglazes are non-toxic after firing. Overglazes are dinnerware safe but ware decorated with gold overglazes should not be used in microwave ovens. Work in a well-ventilated area when applying to your piece.

Overglazes can be used on surfaces that come into contact with food and drink. Care must be taken to avoid hard scrubbing when washing overglazed ware, because of the possibility of scraping off the thin layer of gold or mother of pearl. Treat your overglazed pieces as you would fine china. Although overglazed ware will take repeated washings in a dishwasher, the overglaze will eventually wear away.

Working with luster is not quite the same as working with other glazes, because the material is slightly different. The main thing to be aware of before you begin experimenting with gold luster underglazes is the absolute necessity of great ventilation. We suggest decorating your artwork and allowing it to dry while under a fume hood, if possible; if that’s not an option, we suggest wearing a fume-filtering respirator and doing your decorating in a space with good air filtration, circulation, or ventilation. You can purchase vapor respirator filters linked here.
