Amaco's Kiln Ice Glazes are inspired by Guan Ware, a style of Chinese ceramics from the Southern Song dynasty.
The distinctive crackle effect occurs as the glaze and clay expand and contract at different rates, a process known as the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). The thickness of the glaze influences the size of the crackle: thinner layers produce smaller, tighter cracks, while thicker layers create larger, hexagonal patterns. For the best results, apply a thicker coat.
These glazes work best with brown or buff clays that are free of manganese.
Application tips: For optimal crackle, apply Kiln Ice glazes thicker than standard Amaco glazes, at least 1/8 inch. Multiple thin layers are preferred over a single heavy coat. As the glaze thickens, it will take longer to dry between coats due to the added gums that make it brushable.
