Amaco's Kiln Ice Glazes are inspired by Guan Ware, a style of Chinese ceramics from the Southern Song dynasty.
The distinctive crackle effect occurs as the glaze and clay expand and contract at different rates, a process known as the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). The thickness of the glaze influences the size of the crackle: thinner layers produce smaller, tighter cracks, while thicker layers create larger, hexagonal patterns. For the best results, apply a thicker coat.
These glazes work best with brown or buff clays that are free of manganese.
Application tips: For optimal crackle, apply Kiln Ice glazes thicker than standard Amaco glazes, at least 1/8 inch. Multiple thin layers are preferred over a single heavy coat. As the glaze thickens, it will take longer to dry between coats due to the added gums that make it brushable.
Though Kiln Ice glazes are food safe, they are not recommended for surfaces that will come in direct contact with food because of their durability. For functional ware, be sure to use a liner glaze on food-contact areas.
