Copper sulfate (CuSO4) is a bluish crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is used in ceramics as a glaze component, particularly for metallic coloration and is commonly as a colorant for saggar or pit firing. Because it is a source of copper, it can produce greens and potentially reds, however, it is likely to create darker colors.
Copper sulfate is also used in applications other than ceramics, such as weed killer, algae control, animal feed and glass etching solutions.
Copper sulfate is highly toxic. Avoid skin and eye contact, ingestion and inhalation. Use protective coverings when working with this chemical.
