Cobalt sulfate (CoSO4) is a water-soluble powder that is reddish in appearance. Like other forms of cobalt, cobalt sulfate is a source of brilliant blues that is used in ceramic glaze composition. In ceramics, cobalt sulfate is often used in glazes or as an addition to clay bodies to create a whiter appearance.
Recommended concentrations of cobalt are as follows:
0.25- 2% in slips
0.25 - 1% in glazes
In its powdered form, cobalt sulfate is extremely harmful if swallowed. It may cause skin and eye irritation upon contact and sensitization by inhalation. Carcinogenic by inhalation. Protective coverings, including respirator, are highly recommended when handling this substance.
