Electric vs. Gas Firing:
What's all the fuss about reduction, anyway?
Pre NCECA Conference Workshop:
Mon. March 29 & Tues. March 30
(10:00am-5:00pm)
Sat. April 3 (1:00pm-5:00pm)
The Ceramic Shop is proud to announce the three day hands-on workshop with Steven Hill. This workshop is designed to help you get the most out of YOUR glazes, applied on YOUR pots and fired in YOUR kiln- be it gas or electric. Master potter, Steven Hill, will demonstrate the basic techniques of applying glaze by spraying, and discuss more advanced theories of layering and blending glazes. Testing both mid-range and high-temperature glazes will be included to help you create a unique look all your own. Steven will also discuss firing schedules and programming for your kiln and how they affect the surface of your glazes.
What To Bring:
Since this is a participatory workshop, you should bring 4-6 small to medium sized bisque fired pieces ready to glaze and fire during the workshop. Pieces are fired to cone 8 so make sure to use a cone 6 to 10 white stoneware or porcelain clay body. If you're unsure, it's safer to use a clay rated to cone 10. Contact us and we'll be happy to recommend the best clay body for your work.
What's Included:
Glazes and equipment for the workshop are provided by The Ceramic Shop. Morning refreshments and a boxed lunch will be provided on Monday and Tuesday. In addition, all participants are invited to join us Tuesday night for the NCECA vendor dinner party.
Workshop Schedule:
Monday:
Steven will give a demonstration on throwing large vessels on a Thomas Stuart Signature wheel and how to apply slip to achieve a variety of decorative surfaces. A power point presentation on spraying glaze will follow.
Tuesday:
Steven will demonstrate spraying techniques and discuss the necessary equipment for setting up a spraying booth in your own studio. Participants will glaze their pieces in preparation for the kiln firing the following day.
Saturday:
Participants will meet with Steven between 1:00-5:00pm to pick up finished work and discuss the firing results.*
*All work will be available for pick up at The Ceramic Shop on Friday for those unanable to attend on Saturday.
